Stretch Your Dollar

One feels like Ten

Considering all the frightening news about lost jobs, repossession, and foreclosures, I figured it’s time for me to add my two cents on stretching our precious dollars!

There are scads of suggestions on how to earn a little more money or start a home based business these days, but not many on spending!  So I’m attempting to share a few minor suggestions on how to stre-e-e-e-eeeeeetch the dollar you already possess.

  1. Organize your errands so you don’t waste gas zooming all over town or retracing your path.
  2. Call that family member nearest you and shop together rather than both families driving to the store. You might discover they buy the same brands and you can purchase a bulk size and share it.
  3. Try the above with a close friend.
  4. Borrow a tool from your neighbor or friend.
  5. If you must buy one, try the thrift store or pawnshop for a used one first!
  6. Use a pump application for your kitchen soap, shampoo, and conditioner rather than the squeeze lid.
  7. Join the Freecycle.org in your town and obtain items free.
  8. Run the dishwasher and washing machine only with full loads.
  9. Search your town for a barter club….and trade for things you need.
  10. Lower or raise your thermostat on days when no one is home, eliminating the automatic AC or heater.
  11. Plan a night of family fun playing cards or board games instead of going to a movie.

Most importantly – take 10% of what you are about to spend, setting it aside for a rainy day.  It adds up quickly and can be your automatic savings account.

I love #9 - search your town for a barter club. I don't know if I have one in my town but it certainly is worth the search and taking the 10% of what you about to spend is another super idea! Thanks Jmell.....
